Around the world, Canada is respected for our access to healthcare. We have a comprehensive, publicly funded program for everyone. But I believe that our system falls short. What happens when you can get the medical treatment you need but can’t afford your medication?
One in five Canadian families in London West and across the country are dealing with this issue. They’re facing difficult decisions choosing between rent, food and medication. Universal healthcare fails without universal pharmacare to support it. Canada is the only country in the world with a universal healthcare system that does not currently cover essential prescription medications.
As a New Democrat, I see a straightforward solution. It’s time for universal pharmacare. The NDP plan will allow us to:
- - Provide universal access to necessary medicines for all Canadians.
- - Ensure a fair distribution of prescription drug costs.
- - Provide safe and appropriate prescribing.
- - Make the responsible fiscal choice by maximizing the health benefits per dollar spent.
Let’s close the gap and put universal pharmacare in our healthcare system.
